Here the post “Another effective strategy for managing difficult feelings and situations” continues with how you can increase your self-esteem by managing your thoughts and feelings.
Another effective strategy for managing difficult feelings and situations:
There are several more mature defense mechanisms than the ones suggested by the psychiatrist Vaillant and which have been the topic of the last posts.
The mature defense mechanisms have several benefits:
-Are constructive and helpful ways to handle unwanted impulses and related anxiety
-Can resolve underlying issues or problems
-Can lead to a more peaceful mind and relationships
This post is about the mature defense mechanism assertiveness.
Assertiveness is expressing one’s needs or thoughts in a respectful, direct and firm way.
Assertiveness is a defense mechanism when it is used unconsciously, i.e. not knowing that one comes across as assertive and when used to cover for unwanted anxiety and fear.
More about the important defense mechanism assertiveness in the next post.
