How we avoid topics in order to manage strong feelings:

Repression, the topic of the last post, and suppression, a more mature defense mechanism, are similar. They both involve pushing challenging feelings and thoughts into the unconscious which prevent us from becoming aware of painful or dangerous  feelings and thoughts. The main difference is that repression is an unconscious process, while suppression is a conscious process. It is a conscious choice not to think about something or act on something.

Suppression generally has more positive results than repression for several reasons:

-It deals with unpleasant but not terrible actions or thoughts.

-It may be useful and rational to focus on one thing at a time, suppressing other problems until the most pressing one is solved, such as counting to ten or taking a time-out when angry
