Increase your self-esteem by understanding more strategies to manage difficult thoughts:
The psychiatrist Vaillant divided the defense mechanisms into 4 levels. The levels mirror different levels of maturity and hence are increasingly constructive ways of dealing with difficult thoughts and feelings.
This post continues with Level III which contains intermediate, neurotic defenses common in anxiety problems. They cause the user more discomfort than the observer. Some of them can still be maladaptive since they do not involve effective problem solving.
The two defense mechanisms isolation and undoing are connected to intellectualization.
The defense mechanism undoing is attempting to cancel out, remove or take back an unconscious behavior or thought and thereby to avoid awareness of a thought or action that seems unacceptable, unhealthy, destructive or otherwise threatening. This is done by engaging in contrary thinking and behavior that have the opposite meaning of the distressing impulses.
