Increase your self-esteem by managing shame through activating security (1 minute read)
This post “Increase your self-esteem by managing shame through activating security” continues with how you can increase your self-esteem by listening to your feelings and heal self-destructive shame.
Increase your self-esteem by managing shame through activating security:
One way of reducing self-critical shame is to become more self-compassionate.
Another exercise that can help you in accomplishing this and breaking free from unhealthy shame is to focus on care by activating the safety system of the body.
This is done by seeking human contact focusing on soothing, peacefulness, well-being and feelings of being safe.
You can use the techniques for reducing anxiety, see earlier posts or under anxiety and stress management at www.jennyrapp.com
Examples of strategies for increasing security
Examples of anxiety reducing techniques that also increase inner secrity and experiences of being safe are:
– Breathe calmly with your stomach
– Use visualization exercises (imagery) focusing on being in a safe harmonious place
– Encourage human touch like holding hands, strokes, hugs, massage as well as pat, stroke and caress oneself.
You can test your level of self-compassion by using Neff’s questionnaire using the link https://self-compassion.org/test-how-self-compassionate-you-are/
