This post “Increase your self-esteem by understanding somewhat helpful strategies we use to manage strong feelings” continues with how you can increase your self-esteem by managing your thoughts and feelings.

Increase your self-esteem by understanding somewhat helpful strategies we use to manage strong feelings:

Defense mechanisms can be divided into 4 levels. The levels mirror different levels of maturity and hence are increasingly constructive ways of dealing with difficult feelings.

Level III consists of intermediate, neurotic defenses common in mild anxiety problems but also in diagnoses such as phobias and panic disorder. They cause the user more discomfort than the observer.

Examples of defense mechanisms on this level are:

Repression is pushing painful or dangerous thoughts into the unconscious which prevents us from becoming aware of them. The thoughts can return through symptoms and actions that we are unaware of, but which are noticeable to others.

Displacement is when we redirect thoughts, feelings and impulses aimed at one person on another person.

Reaction formation is converting unwanted or dangerous thoughts, feelings or impulses into their opposites. Reaction formation is adaptive rather than destructive.
