Increase your self-esteem by understanding the defense mechanism intellectualization (1 minute read)
Intellectualization is when a person avoids uncomfortable emotions by focusing on facts and logic.
A focus on thinking neutralizes anxiety, anger or insecurity which less likely lead to embarrassing moments compared to using more primitive defence mechanisms.
Intellectualization is one of Freud’s original defense mechanisms. He believed that intellectualization allows for analyzing an event in a way that protects against anxiety by ignoring the emotional responses, which are considered irrelevant.
Instead, the event is treated as an interesting problem with rational solutions.
The problem is that the feelings might need to be acknowledged to be able to move on.
An example is when instead of confronting the distress after a break-up one is conducting a detailed financial analysis of gains with living alone. Hence, there is no denial of the event taking place, but the emotional consequences are avoided.
Or a person who has been told to have a serious disease asks for details regarding the probability of survival and possible success of various drug treatments.
