This post “Increase your self-esteem by understanding the defense mechanism rationalization“ continues with how you can increase your self-esteem by getting to know and manage your thoughts and feelings.
Increase your self-esteem by understanding the defense mechanism rationalization:
Rationalization is another moderately primitive defense mechanism. It is often used to support the defense mechanism intellectualization.
Rationalization is using a logical explanation after the incident for a controversial decision, action or behavior. Hence, it is about avoiding the true reasons or explanations.
Rationalization can range from being fully conscious as when presenting an external excuse against ridicule from others – they do not understand – to mostly unconscious as when creating a block against feelings of guilt or shame.
Rationalization encourages irrational or unacceptable behavior and motives.
Rationalization not only prevents anxiety, but it may also protect self-esteem and self-worth.
A common example of rationalization is when being dumped by a person one likes to talk that person down and claiming not to be interested at all.
Or when loosing saying that it was intentional.
Or when failing blaming the instructor rather than taking responsibility for own lack of preparation
