Increase your self-esteem by understanding the defense mechanism undoing (1 minute read)
This post “Increase your self-esteem by understanding the defense mechanism undoing“ continues with how you can increase your self-esteem by getting to know and manage your thoughts and feelings.
Increase your self-esteem by understanding the defense mechanism undoing:
Undoing is attempting to cancel out, remove or take back an unconscious behavior or thought and thereby to avoid awareness of a thought or action that seems unacceptable, unhealthy, destructive or otherwise threatening. This is done by engaging in contrary thinking and behavior that have the opposite meaning of the distressing impulses.
The aim is to symbolically revert the entire event as if it had never existed.
Undoing causes unawareness of unpleasant mental contents with less negative consequences than more immature defenses. Undoing is still maladaptive since it does now allow effective problem solving.
An example is after insulting someone unintentionally to start praising the same person as an attempt to balance the damage done out.
Or after thinking about being violent, becoming overly nice or accommodating.
Or apologizing after being assertive.
Or being nice to someone after having an aggressive thought against that same person.
Undoing is one of the fundamental defense mechanisms in obsessive-compulsive disorder. It is more frequent among persons with panic disorder, social phobia, depression and affect instability.
