Increase your self-esteem by understanding the moderately primitive defense mechanism reaction formation (1 minute read)
This post “Increase your self-esteem by understanding the moderately primitive defense mechanism reaction formation“ continues with how you can increase your self-esteem by getting to know and manage your thoughts and feelings.
Increase your self-esteem by understanding the moderately primitive defense mechanism reaction formation:
Reaction formation is converting unwanted or dangerous thoughts, feelings or impulses into their opposites.
It is most often used to hinder the expression of unacceptable anger, sexuality or dependency.
It is a transitional defense mechanism between the primitive defence mechanism acting out and the mature defense mechanism altruism where one focus on other’s welfare even at a personal risk or cost.
A common reaction formation is going to the opposite extreme and being extra kind when you feel you are losing control of your anger.
Or when demonstrating care and concern toward someone one you really want to care for you.
Or covering something unacceptable up by adopting an opposite stance.
Or the more constructive situation becoming very bold when on the inside being very scared.
An example is a person who is very angry with the manager but instead is overly kind claiming to love the job.
Freud claimed that men who are having harsh anti-homosexual attitudes cultivate this to avoid their own homosexual feelings and convince themselves that they are heterosexual.
