More about the moderately primitive defense mechanism reaction formation (1 minute read)
This post continues with the defence mechanism reaction formation. Reaction formation is converting unwanted or dangerous thoughts, feelings or impulses into their opposites.
Reaction formation is adaptive rather than destructive. It assists us in functioning better in our lives by helping us stop destructive behaviors, such as promiscuity or excessive drinking. It shifts from acting out impulses to turning activity into a strength. Like turning a love for drinking into disgust for the habit and hence aiding one in the efforts to quit.
Neurotic level defenses, like this one, modify rather than eliminate the original underlying emotion. Hence, it allows for some expression of the evoked feelings while preventing the person from acting in a more destructive way. However, if one overuses or remains unaware of the underlying feelings, there is a danger of becoming rigid.
