The psychiatrist Vaillant divided the defense mechanisms into 4 levels of maturity mirroring increasingly constructive ways of dealing with difficult situations, thoughts and feelings.
This post is about 3 of 5 mature and empathic defense mechanisms in level IV. Using them creates balance and therefore helps us adapt to conflicting motives. They usually maximize gratification and allow us to be aware of feelings, thoughts and consequences.
Anticipation is managing a potentially stressful event by mentally prepare and plan for scenarios. Anticipation includes reminding ourselves that the discomfort will soon pass, that we have survived similar situations and that future pain will be manageable.
Altruism is when our behaviors and actions are aimed to benefit someone else rather than ourselves. Research has shown that this principle often makes the person more healthy, grateful and wise. But it can also backfire.
Humor is pointing out the funny or ironic aspects. Humor is also about not taking ourselves too seriously. This helps us take in, accept, endure and adapt to a distressing situation.
