Increase your self-esteem by stopping putting others on a pedestal and putting yourself down (1 minute read)
Both devaluation – putting yourself and others down as terrible persons and idealization – putting yourself and others on a pedestal as if being flawless are considered to be image-distorting. Nobody is either perfect or worthless. We all have good sides and sides that can become bad if we do not watch out.
Like most defense mechanisms, we often are not aware when we are doing this. It is done subconsciously as a way to protect us from anxiety, fear and stress.
It is common in borderline personality disorder to rapidly and unpredictably shift from great admiration and feeling close to an intense anger or dislike towards the same person.
This wild shift is called splitting. It is a disturbance in both thinking and the ability to adjust one’s feelings. More specifically, it is about challenges in seeing both the good and the bad in one person when under pressure and stress.
Idealization of self and devaluation of others is also seen in other personality disorders, such as antisocial and narcissistic personality disorder.
