Increase your self-esteem by using these two mature strategies for managing tough situations:
The psychiatrist Vaillant divided the defense mechanisms into 4 levels of maturity mirroring increasingly constructive ways of dealing with difficult situations, thoughts and feelings.
This post is about the last 2 of 5 mature and empathic defense mechanisms in level IV. Using them creates balance and therefore helps us adapt to conflicting motives. They usually maximize gratification and allow us to be aware of feelings, thoughts and consequences.
Sublimation channels unacceptable impulses, thoughts and emotions into more acceptable thoughts and activities. Sublimation is often used in humor and fantasy.
Suppression involve pushing challenging feelings and thoughts into the unconscious which prevent us from becoming aware of them. Suppression is a conscious process, a conscious choice not to think about something or act on something.
