The last post was about the psychiatrist Vaillant’s first of 4 levels of defense mechanisms. The levels mirror different levels of maturity and hence increasingly constructive ways of dealing with difficult feelings and situations. This post is about the second level often present in depression and personality syndromes:

Level II: Immature and narcissistic defenses that annoy the observer but comfort the user:

Dissociation is when a person loses track of time, thoughts or themselves as well as their self-image. It is both an experience as when drifting off or when switching to another part of one’s personality.

Splitting is the immature defense mechanism used when expressing polarized views of self and others as all good or all bad due to intolerable and conflicting emotions.
