This post “Increase your self-esteem by understanding the primitive defense mechanism dissociation<\/em>” continues with how you can increase your self-esteem by getting to know and manage your feelings.<\/p>\n Dissociation is when a person loses track of time, thoughts or themselves as well as their self-image.\u00a0It is both an experience as when drifting off or when switching to another part of our personality or a more permanent state as when having multiple personalities. It can also be about only identifying with the parts of oneself that others and oneself like, which creates a distorted self-perception.<\/p>\n Many people who use dissociation often have a disconnected view of themselves.<\/p>\n Examples of dissociation is when talking about or feeling something psychologically dangerous and suddenly loosing track of what one was about to say.<\/p>\n Or when disconnecting from a challenging conversation by looking away.\u00a0<\/p>\n Dissociation is also a common instinctive response to trauma, a survival mechanism protecting against fear, pain and horror that over time can become problematic.<\/p>\n More serious and prolonged dissociation is common when have been exposed to childhood abuse or rape.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n When do you lose track of yourself?
