Displacement is when we redirect thoughts, feelings and impulses aimed at one person on another person, such as being angry at your boss, but the thought of aiming the anger in that direction is so scary that you say nothing and instead get home and yell at your spouse, leading to problems in other areas of life.<\/p>\n

Displacement might have an important role in phobias \u2013 the person is in reality afraid of something else as well as in obsessive thoughts and behaviors \u2013 as a cover up for what one is really trying to control. Research shows that displacement might be common among individuals with panic disorder \u2013 the anxiety is triggered by unwanted or unaccepted feelings and victims of childhood sexual abuse – avoiding traumatic memories. It is also frequent in emotional eating in order to cope with negative emotions. Emotional eaters are more likely to avoid contact with inner experiences such as thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations.\u00a0<\/p>\n
