Increase your self-esteem by understanding our nervous slips:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Repression is the defense mechanism where we push thoughts into the unconscious which prevents us from becoming aware of painful or dangerous thoughts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Repression can often backlash. Since repression is unconscious it returns through symptoms such as a nervous cough or a slip of the tongue. Hence our bodies can still signal the forbidden desire through symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Normal repression is involved when we as small children come to understand among other things “self” and “other” of “good” and “bad”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abnormal repression occurs when we due to anxiety develop behaviors that are illogical, self-destructive or anti-social. Psychotherapists try to reduce this behavior by revealing the repressed thoughts while helping the patient reduce anxiety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The problem with repression is that the thoughts we are trying to get rid of are not lost. The more one tries to repress something, the more powerful and attractive it becomes. Eventually the repressed desire starts to manifest itself in actions that we are not aware of, but which are noticeable to others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
