This post “Increase your self-esteem by understanding the primitive defense mechanism idealization“ continues with how you can increase your self-esteem by getting to know and manage your thoughts and feelings.
Idealization is a defense mechanism that copes with anxiety and ambivalence by avoiding thoughts of own or other’s less flattering or threatening sides. Instead one is idealizing oneself or others by attributing extreme, unrealistic and overly positive qualities.
In child development idealization is normal, later replaced by the ability to see others as complex human beings having both good and bad sides.
We tend to idealize those things that we have chosen or acquired.
An example is when teenagers idealize their idols, imagining them to have a perfect life and great personalities while ignoring negative information and bad behaviors.
Or idealizing a vacation and thinking about how perfect it will be, not preparing for possible incidents such as unpredictable weather, diseases, bugs etc.
Idealizing is also when consider our decisions as being wise and intelligent by backing them up with argumentation and at the same time downplaying contradictory factors. By doing this we supress doubts that we have made the wrong decision. This creates a greater contrast that makes the good arguments seem even better.

This post “Increase your self-esteem by understanding the primitive defense mechanism omnipotent control“ continues with how you can increase your self-esteem by getting to know and manage your thoughts and feelings.
Omnipotent control is a primary defense mechanism. It is about feeling invincible and having supernatural powers. It is also about feeling like one is having unlimited authority or influence over the surroundings.
Children have an omnipotent development phase when they feel they are superheroes with magical powers. This can remain a desire even for adults. Omnipotent control is a central dimension in some personality disorders such as narcissism and borderline.
It is also present to some extent when having obsessive thoughts as in magical thinking that specific rituals can influence unrelated situations.
Omnipotent control can also be about the primitive fantasy that the source of everything that happens is oneself – like being God or the chosen one in Psychosis.
It is thought to be based on not being able to recognize the separate existence of others and that others can have a will different from one’s own.
However, omnipotent control is also a sound and critical dimension of self-esteem with the important difference that here one accepts that others also can have omnipotent control – that we all are special and unique.

This post “Increase your self-esteem by understanding the primitive defense mechanism withdrawal“ continues with how you can increase your self-esteem by getting to know and manage your thoughts and feelings.
Withdrawal is a defense mechanism used to shield oneself from a difficult or threatening situation. This can be done physically by leaving or falling asleep. It can also be done mentally by reverting into one’s inner world.
Withdrawal also involves avoiding any situations or other reminders of painful or stressful thoughts and emotions.
This can lead to avoiding many normal activities. Therefore, withdrawal is one the most severe defense mechanisms because it can lead to loneliness and isolation, which create more anxiety and pain.
For example a tired child that protects itself by going to sleep. Or a child exposed to fighting parents reverting into fantasy.
Or when a person wants to escape by suddenly becoming silent or leaving the room in the middle of an intense discussion.
Withdrawal allows the person to escape from a painful or threatening reality without distorting it and does not usually create an erroneous interpretation of the reality.

This post “Increase your self-esteem by understanding the primitive defense mechanism introjection“ continues with how you can increase your self-esteem by getting to know and manage your thoughts and feelings.
Introjection is when copying behaviors, attributes or ideas from others, especially role models such as parents. Projection is considered as being an early phase of introjection.
The introjected objects become part of one’s self-schema. It is considered a self-stabilizing defense mechanism that is used when there are psychological needs of a child that are not met by the parents.
The demands of parental figures may be internalized as an integral part of the individual to the extent that ego boundaries become blurred and a sense of separate identity may be lost. Hence, introjection provides the illusion of maintaining the relationship but at the expense of losing oneself.
An example is a person who obeys norms about what girls respectively boys should and should not do.
Parents may be also represented in simple forms such as the good versus the bad parent figure.
Introjection is also when one gets rid of the perceived evil within oneself by taking in the good sides of others and experiencing them as one’s own.
