This post “Increase your self-esteem by listing your achievements this year” focuses on that New year’s eve is coming up.
Before diving into the possible changes you potentially would like to make to your life and new directions you would like to explore, I suggest you reflect over your achievements so far.
It is important to honour yourself for what you already have accomplished and who you have become during this last year since this will set a positive tone.
Try to find at least 20 areas.
It can be traits you have shown, goals you have reached, positive changes you have made, boundaries you have set, development of new insights, values and perspectives, people you have helped, memories and special moments you have created and things you have done well.
Focusing on what you already have achieved will make you less defensive and hence more open to feedback, change and creativity in finding out what you now would like to work on.

]]>Here the post “Increase your self-esteem by using these 5 strategies for managing challenging situations and feelings” continues with how you can increase your self-esteem by managing your thoughts and feelings.
This post summarizes the 5 mature defense mechanisms according to the psychiatrist Vaillant. Using them to manage difficult situations, thoughts and feelings helps us adapt while being aware.
Anticipation is managing a stressful event by mentally identifying scenarios while remembering that the discomfort will pass, earlier experiences of having survived similar situations and knowing that the pain will be manageable.
Altruism is when our behaviors and actions are aimed to benefit someone else rather than ourselves.
Humor is pointing out the funny or ironic aspects while not taking ourselves too seriously. This helps us take in, accept, endure and adapt to a distressing situation.
Sublimation turns unacceptable impulses, thoughts and emotions into more acceptable thoughts and activities. Sublimation is often used in humor and fantasy.
Suppression involves pushing challenging feelings and thoughts into the unconscious which prevent us from becoming aware of them. Suppression is a conscious choice not to think or act.

]]>Here the post “Increase your self-esteem by using these two mature strategies for managing tough situations” continues with how you can increase your self-esteem by managing your thoughts and feelings.
The psychiatrist Vaillant divided the defense mechanisms into 4 levels of maturity mirroring increasingly constructive ways of dealing with difficult situations, thoughts and feelings.
This post is about the last 2 of 5 mature and empathic defense mechanisms in level IV. Using them creates balance and therefore helps us adapt to conflicting motives. They usually maximize gratification and allow us to be aware of feelings, thoughts and consequences.
Sublimation channels unacceptable impulses, thoughts and emotions into more acceptable thoughts and activities. Sublimation is often used in humor and fantasy.
Suppression involve pushing challenging feelings and thoughts into the unconscious which prevent us from becoming aware of them. Suppression is a conscious process, a conscious choice not to think about something or act on something.

This post is about 3 of 5 mature and empathic defense mechanisms in level IV. Using them creates balance and therefore helps us adapt to conflicting motives. They usually maximize gratification and allow us to be aware of feelings, thoughts and consequences.
Anticipation is managing a potentially stressful event by mentally prepare and plan for scenarios. Anticipation includes reminding ourselves that the discomfort will soon pass, that we have survived similar situations and that future pain will be manageable.
Altruism is when our behaviors and actions are aimed to benefit someone else rather than ourselves. Research has shown that this principle often makes the person more healthy, grateful and wise. But it can also backfire.
Humor is pointing out the funny or ironic aspects. Humor is also about not taking ourselves too seriously. This helps us take in, accept, endure and adapt to a distressing situation.

Here the post “Increase your self-esteem by these 6 somewhat mature ways for managing diffuicult thoughts and feelings” continues with how you can increase your self-esteem by managing your thoughts and feelings.
The psychiatrist Vaillant divided the defense mechanisms into 4 levels of maturity mirroring increasingly constructive ways of dealing with difficult thoughts and feelings.
This post summarizes Level III, the intermediate, neurotic defense mechanisms common in anxiety problems. They cause the user more discomfort than the observer. Some do not involve effective problem solving. Some of them are more adaptive:
Repression is pushing difficult thoughts into the unconscious thereby hiding them from us. They can return through symptoms and actions that we are unaware of but others notice.
Displacement is redirecting thoughts, feelings and impulses aimed at one person on another person.
Reaction formation is adaptively converting unwanted thoughts, feelings or impulses into their opposites.
Intellectualization is adaptively avoiding uncomfortable emotions by focusing on facts and logic. This neutralizes anxiety, but the emotional responses might have to be resolved to be able to move on.
The two defense mechanisms isolation – separating ideas and thoughts and undoing – doing the opposite are connected to intellectualization.

The psychiatrist Vaillant divided the defense mechanisms into 4 levels. The levels mirror different levels of maturity and hence are increasingly constructive ways of dealing with difficult thoughts and feelings.
This post continues with Level III which contains intermediate, neurotic defenses common in anxiety problems. They cause the user more discomfort than the observer. Some of them can still be maladaptive since they do not involve effective problem solving.
The two defense mechanisms isolation and undoing are connected to intellectualization.
The defense mechanism undoing is attempting to cancel out, remove or take back an unconscious behavior or thought and thereby to avoid awareness of a thought or action that seems unacceptable, unhealthy, destructive or otherwise threatening. This is done by engaging in contrary thinking and behavior that have the opposite meaning of the distressing impulses.

Here the post “Isolation – a somewhat helpful strategy we use to manage strong feelings” continues with how you can increase your self-esteem by managing your thoughts and feelings.
The psychiatrist Vaillant has divided the defense mechanisms into 4 levels. The levels mirror different levels of maturity and hence are increasingly constructive ways of dealing with difficult feelings.
This post continues with Level III which contains intermediate, neurotic defenses common in mild anxiety problems but also in diagnoses such as phobias and panic disorder. They cause the user more discomfort than the observer.
The defense mechanism isolation is when a person separate ideas or feelings from the rest of their thoughts.
It creates a gap between an unpleasant or threatening thought and other thoughts and feelings.
By this the threatening thought will be remembered less often and is less likely to affect self-esteem and identity. Freud used the example of a person who starts a train of thought and then pause before continuing to a different topic. The pause creates distance between the two topics.
The two defense mechanisms isolation and undoing are connected to intellectualization. Undoing is the topic of the next post.

Intellectualization is when a person avoids uncomfortable emotions by focusing on facts and logic. This neutralizes anxiety by ignoring the emotional responses. This will less likely lead to embarrassing moments compared to using more primitive defense mechanisms. The problem is that the feelings might need to be acknowledged to be able to move on.
The two defense mechanisms isolation and undoing are connected to intellectualization and are the topic of the next post.

]]>This post “Increase your self-esteem by understanding slightly more mature strategies we use to manage strong feelings” continues with how you can increase your self-esteem by managing your thoughts and feelings.
It is about the second of the 4 levels of defense mechanisms. The levels mirror different levels of maturity and hence are increasingly constructive ways of dealing with difficult feelings.
Level II consists of immature and narcissistic defense mechanisms that annoy the observer but comfort the user. The last post was about dissociation and splitting.
Slightly more mature defense mechanisms are:
Acting out is using an extreme and often immature behavior in order to manage unacceptable thoughts or feelings.
Devaluation is putting yourself and others down as terrible persons. A version of this is hypochondriasis which is having an extreme worry about having a serious illness
Idealization is putting yourself and others on a pedestal as if being flawless
Passive-aggressive behaviour/Turning against the self implies redirecting feelings towards oneself that were originally directed towards someone else such as criticizing, punishing or harming oneself instead of the responsible person.
Autistic fantasy is dealing with emotional conflict and stressors by escaping into daydreaming and an inner fantasy world as a substitute for problem solving of the current situation.
To be continued in the next post.
