Increase your self-esteem by understanding the primitive defense mechanism idealization (1 minute read)

This post “Increase your self-esteem by understanding the primitive defense mechanism idealization continues with how you can increase your self-esteem by getting to know and manage your thoughts and feelings.

Increase your self-esteem by understanding the primitive defense mechanism idealization:

Idealization is a defense mechanism that copes with anxiety and ambivalence by avoiding thoughts of own or other’s less flattering or threatening sides. Instead one is idealizing oneself or others by attributing extreme, unrealistic and overly positive qualities.

In child development idealization is normal, later replaced by the ability to see others as complex human beings having both good and bad sides.

We tend to idealize those things that we have chosen or acquired.

Examples of idealization:

An example is when teenagers idealize their idols, imagining them to have a perfect life and great personalities while ignoring negative information and bad behaviors.

Or idealizing a vacation and thinking about how perfect it will be, not preparing for possible incidents such as unpredictable weather, diseases, bugs etc.

Idealizing is also when consider our decisions as being wise and intelligent by backing them up with argumentation and at the same time downplaying contradictory factors. By doing this we supress doubts that we have made the wrong decision. This creates a greater contrast that makes the good arguments seem even better.

Increase your self-esteem by understanding the primitive defense mechanism omnipotent control (1 minute read)

This post “Increase your self-esteem by understanding the primitive defense mechanism omnipotent control continues with how you can increase your self-esteem by getting to know and manage your thoughts and feelings.

Increase your self-esteem by understanding the primitive defense mechanism omnipotent control:

Omnipotent control is a primary defense mechanism. It is about feeling invincible and having supernatural powers. It is also about feeling like one is having unlimited authority or influence over the surroundings.

Children have an omnipotent development phase when they feel they are superheroes with magical powers. This can remain a desire even for adults. Omnipotent control is a central dimension in some personality disorders such as narcissism and borderline.

It is also present to some extent when having obsessive thoughts as in magical thinking that specific rituals can influence unrelated situations.

Omnipotent control can also be about the primitive fantasy that the source of everything that happens is oneself – like being God or the chosen one in Psychosis.

It is thought to be based on not being able to recognize the separate existence of others and that others can have a will different from one’s own.

However, omnipotent control is also a sound and critical dimension of self-esteem with the important difference that here one accepts that others also can have omnipotent control – that we all are special and unique.

Increase your self-esteem by understanding the primitive defense mechanism withdrawal (1 minute read)

This post “Increase your self-esteem by understanding the primitive defense mechanism withdrawal continues with how you can increase your self-esteem by getting to know and manage your thoughts and feelings.

Increase your self-esteem by understanding the primitive defense mechanism withdrawal:

Withdrawal is a defense mechanism used to shield oneself from a difficult or threatening situation. This can be done physically by leaving or falling asleep. It can also be done mentally by reverting into one’s inner world.

Withdrawal also involves avoiding any situations or other reminders of painful or stressful thoughts and emotions.

This can lead to avoiding many normal activities. Therefore, withdrawal is one the most severe defense mechanisms because it can lead to loneliness and isolation, which create more anxiety and pain.

For example a tired child that protects itself by going to sleep. Or a child exposed to fighting parents reverting into fantasy.

Or when a person wants to escape by suddenly becoming silent or leaving the room in the middle of an intense discussion.

Withdrawal allows the person to escape from a painful or threatening reality without distorting it and does not usually create an erroneous interpretation of the reality.

Increase your self-esteem by understanding the primitive defense mechanism introjection (1 minute read)

This post “Increase your self-esteem by understanding the primitive defense mechanism introjection continues with how you can increase your self-esteem by getting to know and manage your thoughts and feelings.

Increase your self-esteem by understanding the primitive defense mechanism introjection:

Introjection is when copying behaviors, attributes or ideas from others, especially role models such as parents. Projection is considered as being an early phase of introjection.

The introjected objects become part of one’s self-schema. It is considered a self-stabilizing defense mechanism that is used when there are psychological needs of a child that are not met by the parents.

The demands of parental figures may be internalized as an integral part of the individual to the extent that ego boundaries become blurred and a sense of separate identity may be lost. Hence, introjection provides the illusion of maintaining the relationship but at the expense of losing oneself.

An example is a person who obeys norms about what girls respectively boys should and should not do.

Parents may be also represented in simple forms such as the good versus the bad parent figure.

Introjection is also when one gets rid of the perceived evil within oneself by taking in the good sides of others and experiencing them as one’s own.

Increase your self-esteem by resisting the inner critic (1 minute read)

This post Increase your self-esteem by resisting the inner critic continues with how you can strengthen yourself. You can do this by being careful with how you talk to yourself.

This is important for mental health and a healthy self-esteem. But it is more difficult than it seems.

You may have trouble with an inner critic if it was uncomfortable to read your list over what is good about you and your appearance.

Try this:

Imagine what you could say that is positively supportive if you heard yourself say the following:
“So stupid of me …”
“Can’t you do anything right …”
“Are you stupid …”
“Idiot …”
“Ugly…”
“Fatty…”

Remember – It does not matter if you believe it or not – as long as it is credible.

This is because the supportive alternatives signal to us that what we say to ourselves can be changed and hence affected. The inner critic does NOT describe facts. It is just a way of picking on ourselves for learning and motivational purposes. But this becomes destructive to our well-being and self-esteem.

This post continues with how you can manage tough life situations like this crisis by changing your attitude. You can do this by developing your sense of coherence and its dimensions:

Understandable

Manageable

Meaningful

The previous post was about how you can try to create more meaning in your life and feel better despite the fact that cruel crises such as this one can be perceived as completely meaningless. You do not have to want to be in this with all its horrible consequences. But you can decide how much the virus will be allowed to steal from you beyond the minimum possible by working on your attitude and priorities. You can decide how you want to develop given that you cannot opt out of the crisis or the changes we must live with.

To think about

What could you change to prevent the virus from stealing more than necessary in your life?

How would you like to develop in the coming weeks given the limitations that exist?

Feel better by finding more meaning in your life (1 minute read)

This post continues with how you can manage tough life situations like this crisis by changing your attitude. You can do this by developing your sense of coherence and its dimensions:

Understandable

Manageable

Meaningful

Working on increasing the experienced meaningfulness in your own life has according to research the most important positive effects on health. If you do not believe that there is any reason to continue and face challenges, if what is happening has no meaning, you will have low motivation to reshape and manage events.

To think about:

If it is difficult to see any meaning with a destructive virus, you can instead think about:

– How can I make sense of this crisis even if I do not want it to be this way?

– What is meaningful to me and in my life now when life looks the way it does? What makes me happy? What gives me energy?

– What drags me down that I can change or influence?

– What have I learned during this period that I might not otherwise have learned?

– Are there any positive effects that the crisis has had on my life?

More about this in next post.

Feel better by getting more involved (1 minute read)

Here continues the post on how you can handle tough life situations like this crisis by changing your attitude. You can do this by developing your sense of coherence and its dimensions:

Understandable

Manageable

Meaningful

Meaningful includes a belief that:

– Things in life are interesting, satisfying and valuable, which makes you motivated to be active.

– There are good reasons or purposes to be involved in life and care about what happens.

Reason and purpose can be created by getting involved and trying to understand the situation. This is how new opportunities often arise. For example, you can get inspiration and ideas that open new doors and create opportunities to help others and yourself. By helping, meaning is created and sometimes also the feeling that we belong together, which creates meaning in itself.

To consider during this crisis

How can you keep up with what is happening in this crisis at a reasonable level? How can you be more active? Who can you help? Who is allowed to help you? In which other ways can you get involved? More about this in next post.
