Increase you self-esteem by understanding how we use shame as a protection (1 minute read)
Here, the post “Increase you self-esteem by understanding how we use shame as a protection” continues with how you can increase your self-esteem by understanding your feelings.
Increase you self-esteem by understanding how we use shame as a protection:
The innate emotion shame is often expressed as humiliation. There are different types of shame which correspond to activating different levels of helpful/ unhelpful behaviours which in turn impact our wellbeing.
This post is about the second type of shame.
2 Shame can be used as a defense mechanism when we irrationally fear the complete and eternal rejection from important others. This fear makes us push our true emotions away, out of consciousness, which often instead produce psychological symptoms such as depression and anxiety. Often shame also leads to augmented compensatory drives such as an exaggerated performance drive and an exaggerated drive to do good far beyond sound levels.
More about shame in upcoming post.
