Increase your self-esteem by developing your defense mechanisms (1 minute read)
This post “Increase your self-esteem by developing your defense mechanisms” continues with how you can increase your self-esteem by getting to know and manage your feelings.
Increase your self-esteem by developing your defense mechanisms:
As mentioned earlier, a defence mechanism is a psychological strategy. It is a manner of thinking and behaving, that we unconsciously use to protect us from anxiety that arise from ‘unacceptable’ thoughts or feelings when we fear being judged by society and loved ones.
Defence mechanisms are learnt in childhood. The more primitive a defence mechanism, the less effective it will be over time.
More primitive defence mechanisms are usually very effective short-term, and hence favoured by children and adults who have not learnt better ways of coping with stressful events. Psychodynamic therapies focus on becoming aware of defence mechanisms as well as how to use less primitive and more effective mechanisms in the future.
In the upcoming posts I will go through common defence mechanisms, starting with the more primitive/potentially destructive ones.
