How to calm the intensity of your feelings (1 minute read)
This post “Increase your self-esteem by calming the intensity of your feelings” continues with how you can increase your self-esteem by getting to know yourself.
The last posts have been about the intensity of feelings which can be labelled on a scale ‘cold’ to ‘hot’ depending on how much arousal they generate in our nervous system.
How to calm the intensity of your feelings:
Even if we know our fear is disproportionately strong, the feeling needs to be acknowledged by the 8 steps described in an earlier post, which per se calms the body.
Thereafter, you can talk to yourself about the realism in your fear to regulate down the feeling even more.
If you are high in the intensity of the feeling so that you are in fight-flight mode – the ‘hot’ version, you first have to regulate down the intensity of the feeling to be able to reappraise the situation.
You can use the same techniques that I have described in the post Anxiety & Stress: 16 effective strategies for calming acute stress & worry (1-minute-read)
