Increase your self-esteem by managing your anger (1 minute read)
This post “Increase your self-esteem by managing your anger” continues with how you can increase your self-esteem by getting to know and handle your feelings.
Increase your self-esteem by managing your anger:
One important anger management strategy, in addition to the stress reduction techniques already posted, is to refrain from reacting for 8 seconds.
According to research, this is the amount of time needed for the brain to make a more intentional response where consequences briefly have been processed.
To maintain wellbeing, it is important to be in contact with all feelings, even anger. Hearing anger is necessary to get ones needs satisfied and borders protected, some of the biological functions of anger.
Try this:
Next time you experience anger or any other strong negative feeling, try to wait 8 seconds before reacting. You can wait 8 seconds by:
Taking 3 deep breaths
Formulate a follow-up question: What do you mean? Can you repeat that? What did you just do?
Visualise a traffic light turning from red – yellow – green
Then reflect on:
How did it feel to wait 8 seconds?
How did it impact you?
