Increase your self-esteem by understanding how fantasies can protect you:
Autistic fantasy is an immature defense mechanism where a person deals with emotional conflict and stressors by escaping into daydreaming and an inner fantasy world as a substitute for problem solving of the current situation.

It is a method for coping with stress. It may replace real healthy social interactions and behaviors with fantasies and daydreams.
Student who are bullied at school may retreat into a fantasy world based on their favorite movie or book. They spend their time in this fantasy world and may therefore get problems connected to social withdrawal.
