Escapism is when distracting oneself to get away from for example unpleasant or boring aspects of life. This is often done through activities involving imagination or entertainment.
Escapism may also be used to distract oneself from anxiety, depression or negative feelings such as anger or sadness.
Escapism can be effective and helpful for shifting unwanted moods and feelings. It is also a part of visualizing goals and hopes for the future making them easier to realize.
But if used to often, escapism can become negative, as when avoiding real life and dealing with the realities of life.
